Turning Time-series Data to Actionable Insights

What is an Anomaly?

An anomaly is an outlier data point, which does not follow the collective common pattern of the majority of the data points and hence can be easily separated or distinguished from the rest of the data.

The 'Smiley face' is an anomaly among the sad faces.

Falkonry connects to data sources to ingest, organize and visualize time series data. Falkonry Insight works on all signal data arriving at the Falkonry platform allowing all users, beginning with Analyst level employees, to explore and assess the anomalies in signal data by systematically identifying signal deviations from normal operating behavior.

I was the main designer working on this new feature in Q3-Q4 2022 with a product manager and six engineers.

Insight V1

Who will be looking at the Anomaly Dashboard?

Meet John who is a Maintenance Engineer working in a steel manufacturing company.

Use Cases

Problem Space

Difficult for systems with a large number of signals

It can be difficult to know where to look for the sources of current or developing problems in a complex system. Users would like to have an always-present and completely unsupervised capability to monitor my plant of the plant components that require immediate attention.

Signal example

Initial Idea

Using the existing table component to list out all the anomalies.

Takeaway

Cross-functional collaboration is the key to move the project forward

Communicating frequently (yes over communication is appreciated 😁) with your cross-function team members can help us gather more context and insights in the project problem space, and having regular syncs with them is the key step to achieve alignments, especially if we want to tackle problems on a system level.
